After four years, Pinterest announced today that it is finally about to generate some revenue from their paid ads. Pinterest will be partnering with a dozen renowned brands on a paid test to experiment with Promoted Pins. The list of partners includes Gap, General Mills, Target, ABC Family and Expedia.
Pinterest first announced plans for Promoted Pins in September of last year. With this ad product, brands can pay to have certain pins appear more prominently in search results and category feeds. The company has said that its goal is to create more attractive ads rather than what one might see with banner advertisements and other online ad products.
Pinterest is frequently cited as the next social media service likely to go public, though this probably won’t happen until at least a year after the company increases its monetization efforts. Although this recent announcement seems to be a step in the right direction.
