New Year Resolutions? Help is literally at hand

New Year Resolutions? Help is literally at hand

According to Forbes, the top 5 New Year’s Resolutions for 2013 are as follows;

1. Go on a diet

2. Stop Smoking

3. Get more exercise

4. Lose 20 pounds

5. Break a personal habit

How many of us have promised that we will do one, some, or even all of these as our January resolution?   Thankfully there is help at hand.  We’ve scoured the top App stores to bring you our 5 favourite apps that support each resolution.

1. Go on a diet

Our first app has to be our very own Calorie Counter.  This ultra user friendly app has achieved over 64,000 downloads.  Track your calorie intake throughout the day; record your current statistics; set a goal weight; and use the huge database of foods with nutritional analysis of calories, fat, carb and protein to keep you in the picture. Monitor your progress using the weight chart to help you achieve your goal.  Quick, easy, effective and very simple to us. http://store.ovi.com/content/222956?clickSource=search&pos=2

2. Stop Smoking

NHS Quit Smoking – This app will send you a daily support message, and keep track of how many days you have been smoke free.  It keeps you informed of the facts about smoking, sends you real life stories and videos, and also keeps a count of how much money you have saved so far by giving up.  The app has a 3.5 star rating, and the reviews state that the support messages are motivational, and that the ‘money saved’ section of the project is definitely something to give you a boost when you are struggling. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/nhs-quit-smoking/id359088809?mt=8

3. Get more exercise

Fitness Buddy Free – Fitness Buddy is a great way to get the information and statistics on exercise without joining a gym. The app includes videos, animations and detailed descriptions on workouts and exercises, and identifies which part of your body the exercise will affect. There are over 1700 exercises inside the app, over 1000 videos and you are also able to keep track of your body metrics, to see if what you are doing is making a difference!  The app has a 4.5 star rating, and great reviews, suggesting  it would team up great with a Calorie Counter app. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/fitness-buddy-free-300+-exercise/id514780106?mt=8

4. Lose 20 pounds

Get in Shape – Not too different from a Calorie Counter, this app not only allows you to keep track of what you are eating, but offers you advice on how much weight you could lose by substituting one food for another. It also sets a workout plan for you, and helps you to create achievable goals to track within the app. You can access workout videos and audio, diet plans, statistics and calculate your BMI with this app. It has a 4 star rating, and in the reviews it has been referred to as ‘the best fitness app out there’. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/get-in-shape-plus-effective/id490625119?mt=8

5. Break a personal habit

Ways of Life; The Ultimate Habit Maker & Breaker – Although there isn’t an app to stop your habits there is an app which can help you manage your habits and set yourself a list of ‘good habits’ as a daily target. There is a red/green colour system to help you track how often you do something –  but the app will only work if you are honest with it! It has a 5 star rating in the App Store, has been described as useful and usable, and has been said to ‘keep you on your toes’. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/way-life-ultimate-habit-maker/id393159800?mt=8

It seems that lots of people have had great success with the apps and their New Year’s resolutions, and the further we head into the year it becomes more apparent that, no matter what the circumstances, there is always ‘an app for that’.
