IDC issued a report yesterday (18 June 2013) which stated that “China’s mobile phone shipments registered at 97 million units in Q1 2013, up 15% compared with the same period in 2012, while China’s smartphone shipments totaled 78 million units in Q1 2013, with a growth of 117% compared with the same period in 2012.”
As well as highlighting the growth of China’s shipment of smartphones, it also revealed the market share of the top smartphone providers. It will come as no surprise that Samsung is first place with a market share of 19%, and Apple behind at number 5 with a share of 9%.
IDC claims Samsung’s success in China is as a result of its local emphasis on pushing mid-tier devices, noting that its products priced under $200 experienced growth of 47 percent compared to the previous quarter.
