As the SMS (short message service) celebrates its 21st birthday this year (December), The Next Web considers how many more years it has left.
It will come as no surprise that whilst free mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Kik, Viber, WeChat and MessageMe are becoming increasingly popular in the developed world they’re eating away at the telecom operators’ SMS revenues, which has traditionally been a cash cow for carriers worldwide.
